I was supposed to be house cleaning yesterday. Instead I finished reading this book. I love Elinor Lipman. I've read four of her nine novels, beginning with the excellent The Inn at Lake Divine.
Isabel's Bed is about an aspiring writer named Harriet Mahoney, who, having just broken up with her boyfriend of nine years, accepts a job being the ghostwriter to Isabel Krug, "the other woman" in a scandal that ended in murder. Harriet moves in with Isabel - an exchange of room and board for her ghostwriting work.
Lipman's characters are great, as always. Isabel reminds me a bit of Bernice Graverman, the flamboyant mother in And Then She Found Me. She's exasperating, but compelling at the same time. She's the kind of friend that's fun to be around but is also exhausting.
What to read next... there's only five more Lipman novels - and one book of short stories. If I take my time, she'll have written another and I won't have to do without.

So far I have only read The Dearly Departed. It was fine. At the time I noted "enjoyable, easy, light. a few nice phrases about death of loved one". So if it wasn't for you and Julie, I probably wouldn't have Elinor Lipman on my list of "want to read". It seems that many reviewers on Amazon say The Dearly Departed is not her best, so I will look forward to trying another one. BTW, Amazon shows a tenth book published this month.
A tenth book...yay!
